From 2006, the Department of Engineering Mathematics will comprise approximately 16 academic teaching staff (6 Professors, 3 Readers, 3 Senior Lecturers and 5 Lecturers), an Administration Manager, 4 administrative support staff, 10 Research Assistants, a Computer Support Officer and Scientific Computer Support Officer, 18 postgraduate and approximately 150 undergraduate students. The Department is responsible for the organisation of 3 degree programmes in the Faculty: the MEng in Engineering Mathematics, the MEng in Engineering Design and the MSc in Advanced Dynamics Engineering (taught postgraduate course). It also contributes additionally to a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Members of the Department were returned in two UoAs in the 2001 RAE. Those returned in the Applied Mathematics UoA achieved a 6* rating and those returned in the Computer Science UoA were awarded a 5A rating. Several members of the Department hold key positions in the ongoing £15M Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamics Engineering (BLADE) facility, opened by HM the Queen in February 2005.
The Bristol Centre for Applied Nonlinear Mathematics (BCANM) is a £1M EPSRC funded Research programme to address both the mathematical themes of BLADE, and the grand engineering challenge of real-time dynamic substructuring. Building on the internationally leading interdisciplinary base of the Applied Nonlinear Mathematics group, and together with the Laboratory for Advanced Computation and the Department of Mathematics, the centre is addressing these aims with five postdoctoral research assistants, appointed on a rolling programme over five years, to work on specific projects within each theme. It is also running a series of workshops and an extensive visitor programme centred on the themes.
You would be expected to complement the current research interests of the permanent academic members of the Applied Nonlinear Mathematics Group, which include:
The work is well supported by research grants, and many of these applications arise from our collaboration with other departments and industry.
In addition, the Department has a long term strategy of nucleating a new research group in the area of Mathematical Biology. Applicants with expertise in this area are especially encouraged to apply. The University is currently establishing a number of cross-faculty Research Themes, of which a theme related to systems biology is one. Other relevant Themes are robotics and autonomous systems, and dynamics engineering. The ability to engage in interdisciplinary research related to one or more of these themes will be an advantage.
You will be expected to contribute to this research programme as well as supporting our undergraduate and masters teaching.
