This is a multimedia enhancement showing animations of nearfields of circular symmetric oxide confined Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). In the animations each frame shows the total nearfield and the nearfield in 00 linear polarization and 900 linear polarization, for a particular pump current as indicated by the L/I curve. This shows how patterns of incressing complexity evolve for increasing pump current.
Notice the fundamental difference in the symmetry properties between the two polarization resolved nearfields. The 00 nearfields are composed of circular-symmetric Laguerre-Gaussian modes, which shows that the laser has O(2) symmetry in this polarization. On the other hand, in the 900 nearfields Hermite-Gaussian modes are present, so that the laser shows only D2 symmetry, the symmetry of a line segment.
