Work Expected.
I am often asked , by careful readers of the webpages, how much work is expected of visitors. So here is my best answer.
The cottage is not a commercial proposition; the money we collect
during the year pays for the council tax and the fuel bills, painting
of the cottage and replacements. Occasionally there is a small surplus
but that is incompetence on my part as it is then taxed and I would do
better spending the money on improving the cottage. We try to keep the
bills down by not having a regular cleaner or gardener. So essentially
all the day to day maintenance of the cottage is done by the visitors.
They mow the large lawn, clean the cottage before they leave, pull up
nettles and dig up brambles so that we keep nature at bay. Some people
who go there enjoy gardening and so do much more, perhaps some pruning
or cutting back of growth around more valuable species. Some
people are good at woodwork and repair or replace the gates or make a
mirror or loo roll holder.
So the answer is that we are pleased to accept as much or as little as
you feel able to do with a minimum of leaving the place at least as
good as you found it.
Thanks.
