Computer Architecture Teaching Aids

Stephen Payne

The Task

  • The aim of this project is to create an interactive downloadable/web-based teaching aid for the 2nd year Computer Architecture course using the software package “Macromedia Authorware 5.2”.This project is concerned primarily with producing an interactive teaching aid to describe how cache and memory systems work, using animations to show timing and data flow.
  • The teaching aid will be available both as a standalone downloadable application and interactive online application.
  • The teaching aid can be used by lecturers  of the Computer Architecture course to supplement their lectures, enabling them to demonstrate and teach the subject material in a more intuitive and fun way.
  • The teaching aid should be available as a learning tool for students to use.

The Tools

  • Macromedia Authorware 5.2 is the main tool used to create the teaching aid.
  • It is a visual rich-media authoring tool for creating interactive Web and online learning applications.
  • It allows diagrams where multiple data objects and paths are interacting to be shown with easy to understand animations.
  • It supports the Windows and Macintosh platforms.

The Teaching Material

  • The teaching material is aimed at 2nd Year students studying Computer Architecture for the first time and is derived from three main sources.
  • The 2nd Year Computer Architecture lecture notes of Professor Dagless
  • The book Computer Organisation & Design: The Hardware/Software Interface (2nd Edition) by David A. Patterson and John L. Hennessy.
  • The Internet - various online University Computer Architecture lecture notes.
